For those desiring to do lettering work for commercial clients. This workshop
caters to individuals with intermediate to advanced lettering skills who
are familiar with lettering and calligraphic techniques but may not have
much experience in applying those abilities in the commercial realm. This
workshop, which may be tailored to a two day, or a three day event, is
designed to equip lettering artists with the knowledge and understanding
of what is required to do calligraphy and lettering in the commercial
world. If
you are familiar with my work, you know that most of what I do is for
mass-production. I rarely work on "original" pieces. Knowing how to supply
clients with camera-ready lettering which they can then use for their
specific needs is essential to being successful in the commercial world.
We cover several items of importance:
I'll begin by showing samples of my work-- briefly discussing my clients' needs; tools used to execute the design; and I will field specific questions from class members.
From there, time will be spent on loosening-up the class members. A series of exercises will help the participant develop a free style that is expressive and unique to that individual. Simple strokes with the tool as well as alphabets and sentences will focus on bringing out spontaneous expressions while keeping legibility.
Next would be a demonstration of how I work by taking a word or phrase, and using several techniques (ruling pen, brushes, flat pens, and various writing tools) to letter a design in black ink. I would then show how to bring the raw lettering to a more "polished" reproducible work.
Finally, the group will be assigned the study of a word or phrase-- and to create designs using tools they are most comfortable with, as well as new tools and paper they may be less familiar with. Once the participant has created a raw piece to work from, we will begin the process of "polishing" the design.
Throughout the workshop, we will take time to discuss specific client/artist situations, and ways artists can better represent themselves to their clients. We'll discuss, scheduling, billing practices & prices, along with self-promotional techniques that help the artist build a clientele. The main objective of this workshop will be to help the participants become familiar with the needs and requirements of clients who use commercial lettering designs, AND to equip the artist with the knowledge to meet those needs. Attention will be given to spontaneity in the raw form, plus clarity, style and readability in the "polished" form. Each participant will receive individual attention with emphasis on accentuating their talents and strong points. They begin with very rough letterforms and before it's over, will walk away with a polished piece of lettering-- plus the knowledge of how to do similar work in the commercial realm. |
